Why Twitter GIFs download as MP4
X doesn’t actually store GIFs as .gif files. When a GIF is uploaded, it’s converted to a short, silent, looping MP4 video — the same clip at a fraction of the size, with far more colours than the GIF format allows. That MP4 is the original file, so it’s what you download here.
MP4 loops play everywhere: in your camera roll, on WhatsApp and Telegram, and in Slack or Discord. If you specifically need a .gif — for example for a site that only accepts GIF uploads — convert the MP4 with any GIF converter; expect the file to be several times larger.

Frequently asked questions
X converts every uploaded GIF into a looping MP4 video. That MP4 is the original file, and it’s sharper and smaller than a .gif would be.
Use any MP4-to-GIF converter or video editor that exports GIF. Keep the clip short — GIF files grow large quickly.
No. GIFs on X are always silent loops. If a clip has sound, it was posted as a video — use the video downloader instead.
Yes. The MP4 can be sent directly in WhatsApp, Telegram and most chat apps, where it plays as a looping GIF.
Download it here in Safari, open Files › Downloads, tap the file and use Share › Save Video to add it to Photos.
X keeps GIFs at the resolution they were uploaded in, often 480px wide or smaller. The download is the best version that exists.
SaveXZ only works with public content and is intended for personal use. Respect creators’ copyright and X’s rules, and don’t re-upload or commercially distribute content you don’t own. We don’t host or store any media.
